Vintage Posters or Affiches
A bit of history
At
the end of the 19th century a new phenomenon appeared in the streets of the
big cities. The "affiche" in Paris, the "Poster" in London and New York and
the "Plakat" in Berlin and Vienna. Large formats, in the new lithography
reproduction technique, posters started to announce cultural events.
Exhibitions, theatre-shows and the like. They were designed by painters and
some of them were so enthusiastic that this medium became a form of art.
Especially in Paris where Monsieur Cheret quickly became famous for his
excellent work. Of course Henri de Toulouse Lautrec springs to mind
immediately.
Street-art is not a recent art form but actually over 100 years ago posters
were already so popular that they changed the street scenes. Don't forget
they were really large and sometimes these large ones come up for sale at
auctions.
Usually
these posters were 2 or 4 separate parts, glued together or on the spot, so
consequently there are very, very few of those early posters who survives to
our days.
